ESM is committed to supporting the development of umpires across the Club.
Our dedicated Umpire Development Officer, Ian Moss, is focussed on supporting the growth of umpiring across all our Men, Women and Youth squads. Ian has been a qualified umpire coach for 30 years, and is an accredited assessor and course tutor for East District.
It is important to the overall success of ESM Hockey Club that we have sufficient numbers of accredited umpires to officiate our league and cup games, so we arrange an official Level 1 Umpire training courses each year, as well as ad-hoc courses (for example, when the rules change, as they will for the 2019-20 season). A Youth Umpire Award is available for our younger members. Course attendees are given a whistle, stopwatch, set of umpire cards and an East District Umpire shirt.
Umpiring is a great skill to learn at any age and produces better players, with a greater understanding of how to apply the rules and interpretations. Umpiring can be great fun, and some players choose a dedicated career in umpiring that can see them working around the country and the world!
Ian coaches umpires individually and and in groups, providing them with written feedback to help clarify development opportunities.
